A Khuvsgul Lake tour with us is a private jeep loop, not a flight and a lakeside hotel. You get your own guide, driver and Land Cruiser, and the road north is part of the trip: Amarbayasgalant Monastery, the Uran Togoo volcano, and long green valleys that turn to larch taiga as you climb toward the Siberian border.
Khuvsgul itself holds about seventy percent of Mongolia's fresh water, a 136 kilometer lake framed by forested mountains. Days at the lake are for horseback rides along the shore, time on the open water, and evenings with the herder families who summer on its eastern side. Beyond the lake, the twelve-day route rides into the taiga to the Tsaatan, the reindeer people, in their high summer camps.
The loops run May to September. Seven days covers the lake and the road north; ten days adds more of the lake and the Darkhad valley edge; twelve days adds the Tsaatan horseback trek; twenty days splices Central Mongolia and the Gobi into one grand route. Every trip is private, so the pace is yours.

How do you get to Khuvsgul Lake from Ulaanbaatar?
By road, in our Land Cruiser: two travel days each way, with Amarbayasgalant Monastery and the Uran Togoo volcano breaking the drive. There are flights to Murun, but the road is the point, the north unfolds gradually and the loop never repeats a stretch. If your time is tight, ask us about flying one way.
When is the best time to visit Khuvsgul Lake?
Mid-June to early September. The lake sits at 1,645 meters and stays cool all summer; July is warmest and busiest, late August is quieter with the taiga starting to turn. The ice festival on the frozen lake is in early March, a different and much colder trip, write to us if winter is what you want.
Can we visit the Tsaatan reindeer herders from Khuvsgul?
Yes, on the twelve-day itinerary, which adds a horseback ride from the roadhead into the taiga to stay with Tsaatan families in their summer camps. It is the most demanding trip we run in the north, and the most remembered. The seven and ten day loops stay with the lake and the herder families around it.
