What does the 1-day Terelj tour cover?
Morning departure from Ulaanbaatar with a stop at the 40-meter Chinggis Khan equestrian statue at Tsonjin Boldog (with optional access to the platform on the horse's head for panoramic views). Continuing into Terelj National Park: Turtle Rock (the 24-meter granite formation), the 30-minute walk up to the Aryabal Meditation Temple, and free time at a Terelj ger camp. Lunch at the ger camp. Afternoon return to Ulaanbaatar. Total time around 8 to 10 hours.
Can the tour run in winter?
Yes. Terelj is one of the few short tours we run year-round. Winter (November to March) shows the park under snow with frozen rivers and crystallized rock formations – often quieter than the summer crowds. The road from Ulaanbaatar is plowed and reliable in normal winter weather. Pack winter outerwear; the Aryabal Temple climb is on a path that stays walkable in winter but with care.
How much time at Terelj on this 1-day tour?
Around 4 to 5 hours of actual park time, plus 4 hours total driving (2 hours each direction). The pacing covers the main sites without rushing: Chinggis Khan statue (45 minutes to 1 hour), Turtle Rock (30 minutes), Aryabal Temple climb and visit (1 to 1.5 hours), lunch and free time at the ger camp (1 to 1.5 hours).
Can I add horseback riding?
Yes – local horse stations near the ger camps offer 30-minute to 2-hour rides. Pricing is paid directly at the time, typically around $20 to $30 per hour. Horseback riding is optional and not included in the tour price; tell your guide if you want to add it. Helmets are usually available; the horses are well-trained for beginners.
What is the Aryabal Meditation Temple?
A small Buddhist temple on a forested hillside in Terelj National Park, reached by a 30-minute walk up a marked path. The walk passes a series of dharma teaching stations (boards with Buddhist texts) on the way up. The temple itself is small and active – a working meditation site rather than a tourist attraction. The view from the temple over the Terelj valley is the visual reward.
What about the Chinggis Khan statue?
The 40-meter equestrian statue at Tsonjin Boldog is the world's largest equestrian statue, completed in 2008, located 54 kilometers east of Ulaanbaatar on the road to Terelj. Inside the base is a museum with archaeological exhibits from the Bronze Age and the Mongol Empire. You can take an elevator to the horse's mane and walk out onto the platform on top of the statue's head for panoramic views over the steppe.
What is included in the 1-day tour?
Specific inclusions confirmed at booking; typically: private vehicle and English-speaking driver and guide, lunch at a Terelj ger camp, all entrance fees including Terelj and the Chinggis Khan statue museum, bottled drinking water. Excluded: international flights, Ulaanbaatar hotel nights, optional horseback riding, gratuities, museum camera fees. Final inclusions are confirmed in writing before any payment.
Is the 1-day tour suitable for families?
Yes – it is one of the most family-suitable tours we run. The pacing is moderate, the walking is short and gentle, the rock formations and the giant statue tend to engage younger travelers, and the day length is manageable for children. The Aryabal Temple climb is the most physical part – if children cannot manage 30 minutes uphill, the family can stay at Turtle Rock instead and meet the rest of the group.
Can I extend this 1-day to a 2-day or 3-day?
Yes. The 2-day Ulaanbaatar-and-Terelj tour adds a morning city tour and an overnight at a Terelj ger camp. The 3-day Semi-Desert and Terelj adds a second day at Khugnu Khan and Bayan Gobi sand dunes, with a third day at Hustai National Park (Przewalski wild horses). Both work with the same Terelj content as Day 1. Tell us your dates.
How does the 1-day Terelj differ from the longer Eastern tours?
The 1-day Terelj is short, near Ulaanbaatar, focused on rocky-formation landscape and the modern monument. The 7-day and 9-day Eastern tours go deep into Khentii and Sukhbaatar provinces for Genghis Khan's historical sites (Khukh Nuur, Deluun Boldog), Baldan Bereeven Monastery, the Uglugch Wall fortress, and the eastern volcanic steppe. They are different kinds of trips – the 1-day is a taste; the longer tours are immersion.
